Area Information - East Haven, CT

The town of East Haven, population 26,530 and covering 12.6 sq. miles is located in south central Connecticut on the east bank of the New Haven Harbor. The area was settled as the East Farms section of New Haven, and one the founders of that town, John Davenport, received the first grant of lands on the east bank in 1640. The first church society was organized in 1709. The town was incorporated from New Haven in 1785. In 1881 the borders were altered when New Haven purchased a western part of the town, then in debt. Today, East Haven has become a large suburb of New Haven. The town contains three and one half miles of beachfront on the Long Island Sound, all of which is designated for recreational use
