Area Information - Guilford, CT

The town of Guilford on the center of Connecticut's Long Island Sound shoreline, covers 47.6 square miles and is home to approximately 20,490 residents. Guildford was first settled in 1639, when it was called Menunkatucket. In 1815, it was incorporated as a borough. Today, Guilford preserves many pre-Revolutionary homes at the same time that it deploys a master plan for industrial growth. The population has tripled since 1950, a large part of this being among the professional classes, including Yale faculty, who work in New Haven. During the summer, this population increases even more, for vacationers are attracted to the many recreational facilities along the beaches of the Sound.
