Area Information - North Haven, CT

The town of North Haven in New Haven County, population 21,580 and covering 21.0 sq. miles is located in South Central Connecticut on lands purchased from the Indians of Mattabeseck, now Middletown, in 1638. The lands along the Quinnipiac River were especially attractive to the farmers in New Haven and by 1715, forty families had relocated here from the mother town. In 1786, North Haven was incorporated from New Haven after a period of sudden growth. The town has prospered as a transportation hub since the New Haven-Hartford Turnpike was laid through it in 1798. Theophilus Eaton opened a brickyard here in 1640, and in 1650 the mining of bog iron began, making the town unusual in that its manufacturing enterprises predate its agriculture. Even so, by 1900 the population still stood at only two thousand, and North Haven had to wait until the rise of suburban living after World War II for most of its growth. Today, however, it is a major industrial-residential community with a substantial population and industrial companies as large as United Technologies, the Upjohn Company, and Marlin Firearms.
